So after a lengthy search on the internet for articles on 'How to say goodbye to your host country' and it ending in a dismal fail...I resorted to Facebook...
I asked a few of my fellow expat-world-travelling friends how they say goodbye to their host countries.
What better way of learning when it comes straight from the horses mouth...
So here are some tips they suggested:
1. Spend time with friends
2. Eat 'last meals' of all the food you won't get back home or in your next country.
3. See the sights you did not get to do yet.
4. Buy the last things you did not get around to buying yet.
5. Revisit your favorite spots - beaches, parks, shops, etc
6. Take photos of your 'usual' spots/things/people (ex roads you used to travel daily, your street vendor, etc)
7. Make photo albums/scrap books. This is one of the ones I do. I have made a photo book with all their friends from the various countries we have been in. They love this, and always show people who come over. I have also made a photo book for the country we lived in before. With photos of our friends, our house, our neighborhood etc. It helps to keep those memories alive.
8. Buy a few momentous to take with.
9. Let your kids and yourself feel their emotions. And help them to work through it.
10. Let your kids decide what of their things goes with and what stays behind and gets given away or sold.
11. Involve your kids in the decision making process. It allows them to feel part of the family and part of the move.
12. Take a videos of the trip to school and work etc, and join it together with a program like iMovie.
13. Make sure to say goodbye to friends.
These are just a few ideas, please share what works for you and your family!
