Home to the ancient Indus Valley Civilisation and a region of historic trade routes and vast empires, the Indian subcontinent was identified with its commercial and cultural wealth for much of its long history.[13] Four world religions—Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism—originated here, whereas Judaism, Zoroastrianism, Christianity, and Islam arrived in the 1st millennium CE and also helped shape the region's diverse culture. Gradually annexed by and brought under the administration of the British East India Company from the early 18th century and administered directly by the United Kingdom from the mid-19th century, India became an independent nation in 1947 after a struggle for independence that was marked by non-violent resistance led by Mahatma Gandhi.

What does ADRA India do?
It is the small things, however, that matter, clean been lost to a disaster, a few Polio drops to prevent a lifetime paralysis, a mobilizing community against TB, a family enjoying a new livelihood opportunity. These are just some of the ways that ADRA partners with communities. Partnership are also formed with other like minded organizations, such as the CORE Group for Polio, the NGO Tuberculosis Consortium (NTC), and participates in School Safety Forums of the National School Safety Program (NSSP). These partnerships allow ADRA to contribute to broader strategies and have a wider reach, capturing the value of working together in a coordinated manner to achieve a common goal. The people of India show incredible resilience in the face of annual monsoons, tropical cyclones, and living with the ever present risk of earthquakes. Our programs are designed to reduce the vulnerabilities of communities and to build their inherent capacity to be prepared when disasters come. We protect women and girls against trafficking and work on to prevent gender based violence. ADRA trains families on water use, hygiene and sanitation practices in many of the programs, recognizing their link to well-being and health. These are part of our broader programme focal areas of health, livelihood and emergency response, all designed to make a real difference in the lives of real people.
